Because so much information is included, the print size is small, but since DVDs are included, print size really does not matter. The book defines our history front page by front page. This is quite a document. I ordered "The New York Times: The Complete Front Pages: 1851-2008" as a gift for my husband. And further provides information that assist one in better understanding how our country and world progressed (or not) over the years. We are most impressed and pleased with the book and with the service provided by Amazon.com. The book was delivered when promised and the price was very reasonable. My husband loves the book and expects that it will provide many years of pleasure.
But beware.it is a very big and heavy book. And it keeps everyone busy when visiting just reading it. I bought this BIG book for my mom for Christmas. She loves it.
I give it two stars (rather than one) because it's unquestionably got a treasure of first hand history. I seem to remember there being a little more to it.
I prefer my history un-abbridged, thank you - especially if the historian/editor has an agenda. Just maybe the choice of which pages to include reflects the worldview of the current NYT staff more than the actual history.
I badly wanted this book and received it as a gift. Example: flip through the Reagan era - the only US/Soviet headline to catch your eye relates to a disarmament agreement with Gorbachev.
Save your money. then returned it.
But the big problem is in what ISN'T there.
For the modern age nothing could be more appropriate than a book of spontaneous discovery. The print size in many articles is quite small so I will need some magnification (age does that), but there are thousands of bits to explore. This book is ideal for those of us who delight in serendipitous discovery accompanied by the option of a brief encounter or an in depth study of an event. Headlines that could have appeared this morning along with headlines marking events I have never seen mentioned before will keep me going back for a very long time.
This history of mankind is seen repeated over and over in this wonderful book. The book is huge as it is, the print size is merely an adaptation I will make, not a complaint of any kind. Grasping the emotional reality of today's unemployed by revisiting the faces of those from the '30's is a stark reminder of letting things work themselves out without taking action. I received it as a gift. Here we are again, reliving the desperation of those in need, the arrogance of those in greed and the confusion and anxiety of the rest of us. Only the true historian would want to slog through every day of the last 150 years and read every article (FYI I am a Medieval English History slogger myself).
The publishers have packed this volume with an incredible array of modern history. It is, in my mind, one that will indeed keep on giving for a long time to come. I did not want to put it down. Today was a day for the big headlines.
The three disc set which comes with the book is priceless. I highlighted some of the events which happened on his birthday. The New York Times book of front pages is a gift for all ages. I most recently used the book and disc set to give a talk on someones 50th birthday. A special book for all people who are interested in history and for those who haven't realized that they should be. For older people it is a flashback to memorable moments of their life. For younger people it is a comprehensive history from which many lessons can be learned.
